CTM seeking clarification on Wifi Go complaints


In statements to Business Daily local telecommunications operator Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau, S.A.R.L. (CTM) said it would discuss with Macao Post and the Telecommunications Bureau its requests for compensation for incomplete services during the installation of the city’s free access wireless broadband service WiFi Go.
On Wednesday, the head of the current communications regulator, Derby Lau, told media that her department would request a “non-monetary” compensation from CTM for not installing 25 Wifi Go access points that still cost the department MOP422,000 (US$52,780).
The statements came after a report from the Audit Commission describing the public wifi service, launched in September 2010 by the former Bureau of Telecommunications Regulation (DSRT), as almost ‘useless’ and lacking efficiency given the amount of public funds required, some MOP161.3 million.
One of the issues mentioned in the report was that for the first six contracts granted by DSRT between 2009 and 2015, the department paid MOP6.55 million for only 528 of 553 expected wireless access points to be installed.
The head of the current communications regulator – formed in January of this year after the DSRT merged with Macao Post – told local broadcaster TDM that the department “would fight to be compensated by CTM” with additional manpower services as the contract documents specifying the amount of hardware needed and the cost of purchase and installation “weren’t followed”.
In response to the statements by Ms. Derby Lau, CTM told Business Daily: ‘We look forward to working closely with Macao Post to clarify the matters in order to reach mutual satisfaction’ and that the company trusted the MSAR Government ‘will find our services and support to Wifi Go as being constructive.’
