Govt admits challenges of enforcing smoking ban

Health Bureau director Lei Chin Ion says the government faces “many challenges” in enforcing the smoking ban in casinos. He said there was “a limited number of laboratories” here that the government and the casino operators could use for air quality tests. Mr Lei told the Legislative Assembly yesterday the results of a second round of air quality tests would be ready soon, after the first round detected problems in 28 of the city’s 46 gaming establishments. He says requirements here “are stricter than the ones in Las Vegas and Singapore”. He said his bureau had also begun checking air quality in VIP gaming rooms where smoking is allowed. Since January, smoking has been banned in gaming venues except in designated smoking areas, which cannot take up more than half their gaming floors.
