Las Vegas Sands loses lawsuit over Macau licence

A Nevada state court has awarded Hong Kong businessman Richard Suen US$70 million (MOP560 million) payable by Las Vegas Sands Corp. Mr Suen was seeking US$328 million in damages, based on his claim that under a 2001 agreement with Las Vegas Sands, he is entitled to two percent of the casino operator’s net income from its Macau properties. He claimed that he helped the operator to get a licence to operate casinos in Macau. Sands argued that it won its Macau license without the businessman’s assistance. Lawyers for Mr Suen did not comment, and a representative for Sands did not provide any comment beyond confirming the verdict, Reuters reported. It was the second time the businessman’s claims have gone to trial. In 2010, the Nevada Supreme Court reversed a US$43.8 million jury award in favour of Mr Suen, and sent the case back for a new trial. Las Vegas Sands is the parent company of Macau-based gaming operator Sands China Ltd.
