Women still fired for being pregnant

The Labour Affairs Bureau dealt with 28 cases of workers who complained of being dismissed for being pregnant between January 2011 and June this year, the Portuguese-language newspaper Ponto Final reports, citing official data. The cases involved a total of 30 workers. The newspaper said two women had been able to prove they had been dismissed unlawfully, while 14 had dropped their complaints after settling with their former employers. The bureau says it considered eight had been lawfully dismissed and in two cases the women had intended to be fired. Three cases involving four women are still under investigation. The law prohibits an employer from firing an employee because she is pregnant or has just given birth.
