Govt to pay MOP12 mln to avoid TV blackout

The government will pay Macau Cable TV Co Ltd about MOP12 million (US$1.5 million) to avert a television blackout by allowing public antenna companies to relay Macau Cable TV transmissions, it announced yesterday. Macau Cable TV says it will give up asking for compensation from the antenna companies for infringing television copyrights. Macau Cable TV signed contracts with 14 antenna companies yesterday allowing them to relay through their networks programming provided by Macau Cable TV. This is to comply with a June court ruling stopping the companies from illegal broadcasting, which could have led to a television blackout.
